Random Things to See in Las Vegas

Calico Tank Trail Lookout

Let’s say you find yourself in Vegas, but you’re not really into the party scene anymore. Crazy right? Like why go to Vegas if you’re not a fan of gambling and partying??

Well, recently that was me, so do not judge.

But to make sure my trip was not wasted, I took some time to explore some popular/not so popular spots in Vegas! Check out some of my favorites below.

Seven Magic Mountains

This is an art exhibition about 30 minutes outside of downtown Vegas. It was created by Swiss artist Ugo Rondinone, which features 7 30-35 feet stacked boulders. The installation is unique in how the bright colors contrast with the surrounding desert landscape. It is supposed to represent the midway point between the natural and the artificial. Many have also compared the art to the creation and development of Vegas itself.

I visited on a Wednesday afternoon, and it wasn’t crowded. I’ve heard others recommend going in the morning time to avoid the crowds, but personally I did not find that to be necessary. You could view the installation and still safely practice social distancing from others.

If you decide to visit this spot, I believe this will be the final year for its display.

Calico Trail Las Vegas Nevada

Red Canyon National Conservation Area

This is a great state park with lots of trails to explore! But let me preface this by saying hiking in Las Vegas in the summer is no joke! It was over 100-degrees when I went, so I recommend visiting the trails in the late fall or early spring.

The trail that I hiked was Calico Tanks Trail, which took about two hours. The trail ends at the Calico Tank, and if you go during the right time of the year, it will be filled with water. However, if you continue to push past the tank, then the trail leads to two overlooks. Both provide amazing views of the Vegas Strip area. Be careful though this path has quite a few different terrains and some parts will require you to get on all fours. This trail has some shaded areas, so if you need a water break, be on the lookout for these spots.

Now what is a classic Vegas trip without visiting the Las Vegas sign?

If you decide to venture to this spot, you may be greeted with a long line. I went around 3 in the afternoon and was about 10th in line. I decided that the wait was not worth it, so I just took a picture off to the side. If a photo op is really important to you, I would suggest arriving in the early morning.

Fremont Street Experience

Request an Uber to the “Fremont Street Experience.” Yes, seriously… that is what you type in.

Fremont Street is a small strip of bars, casinos, and live music. To give some perspective on the size, it will probably take less than 10 minutes to walk from one end to another. This strip is also home to the infamous SlotZilla Zipline!

Now I have done Fremont Street during the day and the night and they could not be more different! I recommend visiting at night at least once. But be prepared, Fremont Street at night is truly an experience, so don’t say I did not forewarn you, hahaha.

I will add that the overhead graphics at night are really cool to watch. I’m into all things technology, so the overhead was really intriguing to me. Another bonus is the live music! There are three stages on Fremont, so if you’re not a fan of one, then walk down to another. As a fan of country music, it was cool listening to the different renditions of popular 2000 country songs.

Bellagio Fountain Waterworks show

Bellagio Fountains

Watch the water show at least once or twice. The show plays every 15 minutes and is best viewed at nighttime. For the best view, stand on the main walkway. Or try to grab patio seats at either Lago by Julian Serrano in the Bellagio or Hexx Kitchen + Bar in Paris Las Vegas. Both restaurants have great menus, so you will not go wrong with either.
