3 Popular Trails in the Red Canyon National Conservation in Nevada

View from Calico Tanks Trail

If you like the outdoors and find yourself in the Vegas area, take some time and head over to the Red Canyon National Conservation Area. This area is filled with beautiful scenery and access to tons of hiking trails. If you are not used to high temperatures, please do not attempt these hikes in the summer Nevada weather. I suggest visiting during the cooler months, such as late fall and early spring.

If you attempt these hikes in the summer, PLEASE be sure to have lots of water. It is recommended that each hiker has at least a gallon of water.

Calico Trail Las Vegas Nevada

Calico Tanks Trail

This is the trail that I hiked. It is a 2.2 mile out and back hike that leads to two different lookout peaks. There are quite a few different terrains that you will have to tackle on this trail. It starts off with a gravel pathway and then slowly turns to sand. As you near the end of the trail, you may scale some rocks. It’s nothing too crazy, but be prepared.

This trail is known for being heavily trafficked, so take that into consideration before you head out. When I went there were only four other individuals on the trail, but again it was 100+ degree weather.

Turtlehead Mountain Peak

Turtlehead Peak Trail

This trail is 4.6 miles out and back. Most people complete it in under 4 hours, but that really depends on the age and fitness of the hiker. Some reviews state that even though this a great trail, it is strenuous for younger children. Majority of the trail is a steep incline with a lot of loose gravel and rocks. While the view at the top will be worth it, please be cautious as you climb.

Depending on when you visit this trail, you may walk through a cool shady canyon. During the summer months, this trail rarely has shade, so be cautious if you attempt. If the waterfall is flowing, it sometimes provides a cooler temperature; however, it rarely flows during the summer.

In addition, this terrain is not recommended for dogs and small children. It requires climbing enormous boulders, which is not recommended for young children.
